What goes with Taj Mahal quartzite.

Taj Mahal is the warm quartzite designers reach for now that white engineered stone is falling out of kitchens. Its ivory ground and soft taupe-gold drift ask for materials a shade warmer or a shade deeper, never a cold white.

One warm stone leads, the rest stay quiet.

Let the quartzite carry the movement on the island and keep everything around it calm and close in tone, so the island reads as the one feature in the room.

Taj Mahal quartzite

A thick top with waterfall ends. We lay the pieces out on the slab photograph first, so the veins continue from the top down the sides.

A full-height splashback from the same block, or limewash plaster if you want the island to stand alone.

Floor

Italian Ivory travertine

Vein-cut travertine in soft straight bands, a shade lighter than the island. Filled and honed for a kitchen floor.

Cabinets, timber and metal.

Choose finishes that share the stone's warm undertone. The slab you choose sets the exact shade, so compare the cabinet sample against the slab photograph, not against a showroom sample.

  • White oak

Rift-sawn or flat-panel; the closest match to the stone's warmth.

  • Warm white

A creamy white, not a stark one, if you want painted cabinets.

  • Walnut or deep taupe

For contrast on the island base or a pantry wall.

  • Sage green

A soft colour that sits well with the gold in the veins.

  • Brushed or aged brass

Picks up the gold drift in the stone, for taps, handles and pendants.

Cool grey cabinets, stark white and polished chrome read cold beside it and can make the stone look muddy.

The stone itself, before anything is cut.

Every Taj Mahal slab is different: some are greyer, some warmer, some carry more gold. These are real slabs. For your project we send photographs of the slabs available now, and you choose the one that matches your cabinet sample.

Taj Mahal, or one of these?

Three stones with a similar calm, light character, and how each one differs.

Super White texture reference

Super White

Cooler and greyer: the Carrara look. A dolomitic stone, so ask about care for a kitchen top.

Cristallo quartzite texture reference

Cristallo quartzite

Milkier and more translucent, with gold and grey veins. Glows when lit from behind.

Close-up of Calacatta Macaubas quartzite: long parallel grey veins across a white ground

Calacatta Macaubas quartzite

White with long, fine linear veins in grey and taupe; more graphic, less warm.
