Pairing · Bathroom
A Calacatta bathroom, warm rather than cold.
Calacatta has a warm ivory ground and long grey veins, some touched with gold. Treat it as the warm white it is: pair it with soft grey, walnut and brass, and let one bookmatched wall do the work.

One bookmatched wall, everything else calm.
Two slabs opened like a book behind the vanity give the room its pattern. The floor and trims stay quiet so the veins can be read from the door.

Feature wall and vanity top
Calacatta marble
Two consecutive slabs mirrored so the veins meet in the centre; the vanity top and basin from the same block. We mark the layout on the slab photographs before cutting.

Floor
Castle Grey marble
A soft dove-grey marble that picks up the grey of the veins without competing. Honed for a bathroom floor.

Shelf and niche trims
Nero Marquina marble
A thin line of black marble frames the white and gives the eye an edge.
Timber and metal.
Warm finishes keep the white from turning clinical. Compare them with the slab photograph, because each Calacatta slab carries a different amount of gold.
Walnut
For the vanity cabinet; its warmth answers the ivory ground.
Brushed or unlacquered brass
Picks up the gold threads in the veins.
Polished nickel
If you prefer the room a little cooler, nickel keeps it bright without chrome's chill.
Warm white plaster
For any wall that is not stone.
Blue-white lighting and cool grey paint make a warm Calacatta look yellow; choose warm-white lamps.
The stone itself, before anything is cut.

Calacatta varies from slab to slab in how much grey and gold it carries. These are real slabs. For a bookmatched wall we photograph consecutive slabs from the same block, so you approve the pair, not a sample.
